(male announcer) this is the bay area news station, kron 4 news starts now. >> the motive remains a mystery. tonight federal agents are zeroing in. on how the boston marathon bombing was carried out. federal agents do now know the apparent method used -- the f-b-i says. a pressure cooker and black bag were part of a bomb. what we know tonight: three blasts. and more than 180 people

injured. after the twin explosions ripped through the crowded finish line are on monday. but. it is still not known who is behind the deadly attack.whether they are foreign or domestic terrorists. and why. president obama plans to visit boston on thursday to attend an interfaith service in honor of the victims. hundreds of people gathered tonight on the boston common for a vigil to honor the victims. the crowd sang songs and lit candles. they held signs that read - "peace here and everywhere." mourners tonight said, the people of boston would not be afraid. there was a heavy military presence on the boston common. with dozens of national guard troops standing by.

it has been reported and that this backpack/bag is part of the bomb. and that shrapnel became air born. nails were inside of the pressure cooker to become shrapnel. you can see the lettering on that the fbi is processing these items in a laboratory. they will try to track this down and hopefully the suspects will be able to be found. this is heavy-duty metal. that became a weapon and it was meant to harm humans. grant lodes, kron 4 numeronews >> a bay area boy was at

the is scheduled to undergo another surgery tomorrow. he was wounded in the blast. 11 -year old aaron hern of martinez, was along the race route , cheering on his mom at the time of the explosion. >> it is heartbreaking that we have to go off and we are not comfortable the we are going to be safe. and i know that president obama will help to try to take care of this for us. he is a bright, athletic cad. please servile sports and does a great in school. please -- several sports and his athletic-- >> >> pam: and tonight -- a community fund raiser was held in the bay area for the 11 year old boy and his family. another fund raiser is planned for saturday. kron four's jeff bush shows you what tonights fundraiser was like. and explains what >> reporter: martinez is a very close knit community. so, when the word went out

that the hern family was right there in boston at the time when one of those bombs went off, the owners of the roxx restaurant, here on main street, sprung into action. let's take some video and show you what it looked like inside and you can see the tail end of this fundraiser dinner that was supported and promoted by this restaurant. here, people from all around martinez came out to enjoy the meal but, also, to support the hern family. >> martinez is very community oriented. my grandchildren go to school with them. we just wanted to do something to help.: how has the >> reporter: turnout been? it looks pretty good.: it was >> phenomenal. we, actually, sold out. we had to shut the door. i couldn't have even planned for anything this successful. >> reporter: the owners of the roxx tell me they stopped counting at about 150 meals. they tell me that all the food was donated for this event. they are saying that all of the money they raised will go to help out with the hern family medical expenses and travel expenses. i'm jeff bush in martinez,

an oil leak caused by the gunfire, has been contained by p-g&e. meanwhile, santa clara county is handling emergency phone service for affected a-t&t customers. details on the arrests and the chiefs reaction. >> reporter: five teenagers are in police custodycharged with killing e-m-t quinn boyer. police say the suspects admitted to their involvement in the crime. according to o-p-d, there was 1 trigger person, but all 5 are being charged with homicide, robbery, and car jacking. police say this is an isolated incident. all of the teens involed are between 14 and 16 years old and live in oakland. >> we believe this is a group of young juveniles that were hanging together and got into some real bad behavior. we have the

>> pam: three teen boys appeared in juvenile court for a detention hearing today. they are accused in the alleged sexual battery and cyber -bullying of 15-year old audrey potts. there was no comment from attorneys for the pott's family, nor the three suspects. before or after the hearing at juvenile hall this morning in san jose. the boys were arrested last week at saratoga high school, in connection with the september 2012 incident. the assault allegedly occurred at a house party after potts passed out from drinking, according to her attorney. a week later, audrey potts hanged herself. when the lewd photographs of her. were digitally passed among classmates. a county prosecutor also declined to comment about the case specifically, but did outline what the court is considering. as it decides whether to release the boys from

custody. on monday, the potts family and their attorney addressed the media. calling for the defendants to be tried in open court, as adults. a decision on that could take up to a month. >> gary: the giants in milwaukee. the a's want to beat up houston. and pat summerall has passed away. coming up, later. you kids should count yourselves lucky.

>> pam: new information tonight surrounding the debate over gun control. tomorrow, the senate is set to vote on a series of gun control amendmants. including a bipartisan plan to expand background checks to more gun buyers. the plans is an effort by gun control supporters to tighten firearms laws in the wake of the newtown school massacre. the measure would also tighten laws against gun trafficking. and boost school safety aid. >> u-s senator roger wicker is targeted with a letter that tested positive with a potentially deadly poison. an envelope. tested positive for ricin. was addressed to the miss intercepted at an off- site screening center on capitol hill senator wicker and his staff is okay. he has been given a protective detail. ricin is a highly toxic substance. an amount the size of the head of a pin -- can kill an adult.

>> more now on the boston marathon bombings. three people were killed. and nearly 200 were injured in the attack. doctors treating the victims say, they are growing increasingly optimistic that all of the injuried will survive. one of the three people killed has been identified as a chinese national and grad student at boston university. the other two are a 29 year old woman. and an eight year old boy. heart=rending images of pain and suffering from boston globe photographers. but this one may be even more painful. a schoolroom picture of eight year old martin richard, holding a sign

saying "no more hurting people." martin was standing next to his father watching runners crossing the finish line. >> dispatcher: we have a multi casualty incident here >> pam: the boy took the full force of the blast. a pediatrician who tried to treat him at the scene told her husband. >> she thought he was african american because of all the soot and debris that was around. >> martin's sister lost a leg in the blast. his mother has a head injury. a neighbor says his father returned to their home late last night. >> "i saw him get out of the passenger seat and he looked like he was in a state of shock. i said 'bill.' he didn't answer me.

he just walked very slowly into the house. so, his friend came over and i said 'is everything okay?' he said 'no martin was the little boy that was killed.' this morning the family of 29=year old krystle campbell confirmed that she was killed in the blast. >> she was always smiling and friendly. you could not ask for a better daughter. i cant believe it's happened doctors treating the injured say the bombs were packed with ball bearings and carpenters nails, designed to kill and maim. >> these patients came to us with completely mangled and for hour after hour, the surgical teams removed limb after limb. >> i've been moved and as a matter of fact really amazed by the resolve of our patients. i talked to some of them. i talked to some of the families. they're really amazing people. some of them woke up today with no leg, and they told me that they're happy to be alive.
